StatePoint Container gardens are a viable and popular cultivation option, especially for those who have limited sun-exposed spaces or are looking to start small and learn the basics of gardening. “Containers, whether bought or recycled, are a great place to plant herb and vegetable gardens,” says landscape designer Doug Scott of Redeem Your Ground in Atlanta. “But to get it right, there are a few things to keep in mind.” To help you successfully cultivate a container garden, Scott offers the following pointers: – Well-drained, not dry or overly wet soil, is necessary for herb and vegetable growth, so using bottom-draining pots with a peat-based potting soil specifically formulated for herbs and veggies will facilitate proper soil drainage and moisture retention.
– The proper container size depends on what you’ll be growing. Most small herbs do well in pots as small as eight inches in diameter, while larger plants may require a gallon pot or larger. For visual interest, consider repurposing items around the house to use as your container, such as an old pail. – Incorporate a “thriller, filler, spiller” planting approach to maximize space and aesthetic appeal. This means tall focal plants in back, middle-layer plants that fill in and plants that will cascade over the container in front. – Soil dries out more quickly in container gardens than garden beds, especially if you place containers outdoors in the sun. Perform daily soil moisture checks. You may need to water outdoor container gardens every day – and possibly twice a day -in extremely hot weather. – Place your container garden where it will get the optimal amount of sunlight – between six and eight hours a day. The beauty of container gardens is their movability. You can even follow the sun as exposure changes throughout the seasons. Always refer to the care tags on the specific plant to determine a prime location. – Gardens planted in a container are entirely dependent on you to provide nutrients. Start out with an organic, rich potting soil formulated for container gardens. Then, going forward, fertilize your container every two to four weeks by pouring a nutrient-rich liquid solution directly into the soil. – Don’t forget to reap what you sow. Harvesting will generally help increase yields and prevent plants from outgrowing their containers. For best results, use this five-step method: water plants before harvesting, make clean cuts, keep them clean, dry your harvest quickly and store it away from sunlight and moisture. More expert advice is available online. Scott has partnered with Exmark, a leading manufacturer of commercial mowers and equipment, on a video series for DIY homeowners called “Done in a Weekend.” Among the free videos is “Contain Your Enthusiasm,” offering tips to help you successfully plant, grow and care for herbs and vegetable container gardens. There are a few important considerations that every container gardener should know. Be sure you’re equipped with the proper tools and knowledge before getting started. Some time ago, I read an article in Signs of the Times magazine by Darren Morton’s about the benefits of “green spaces.” It seems even Aristotle saw the benefits of nature as providing us with a “love of life.” Many studies have revealed exposure to natural environments make people feel more positive and less negative. Unfortunately, many people live in cities, or “gray spaces,” and are starved of the natural world. A new term has been coined to describe this problem: nature-deficit disorder (NDD). Children with NDD are more prone to anxiety, depression and attention deficit disorder. I think it would probably affect adults the same way. More than 100 years ago, a biologist named Sir John Arthur Thompson said increasing modernization would disconnect us from nature and we would suffer for it. I believe he was on to something. But it seems that trend is reversing in the garden world. Every year for the past 10, more people have started gardening than the year before. COVID-19 lockdowns caused an even bigger jump. According to Chairman George Ball, the U.S. seed company W. Atlee Burpee & Co sold more seed in March than any time in its 144-year history. There are some of the benefits of gardening you may not even realize you are getting. One study asked two groups to complete a stressful task. Afterward, one group gardened for 30 minutes, while the other group read indoors. Not only did the gardening group report better moods than the reading group, they also had measurably lower cortisol levels. Elevated cortisol levels have been linked to everything from immune function to obesity to memory and learning problems and heart disease. A study done in Stockholm showed regular gardening cuts stroke and heart attack risk by up to 30 percent for those older than 60. Make sure to expose your limbs (without sunscreen) for just 10 minutes during midday gardening — this will give you enough vitamin D to reduce risks of heart disease, osteoporosis and various cancers. Just don’t over do it, more is not better in this case (as it is with ice cream). As we age, diminishing dexterity and strength in the hands can gradually narrow the range of activities that are possible or pleasurable. Gardening keeps those hand muscles vigorous and agile without oft-forgotten exercise. But don’t push your hands too far — gardening can also set the stage for repetitive stress injuries, tendinitis and carpal tunnel. One long-term study followed nearly 3,000 older adults for 16 years, tracking development of all kinds of dementia and assessing a variety of lifestyle factors. Researchers found daily gardening to represent the single biggest risk reduction for dementia, reducing incidence by 36 percent. Another study estimated the risk reduction at 47 percent! Researchers are not sure exactly how gardening helps because Alzheimer’s is a mysterious disease, and the factors influencing its incidence and progression remain poorly understood. However, gardening involves so many of our critical functions — including strength, endurance, dexterity, learning, problem solving and sensory awareness — that its benefits are likely to represent a synthesis of various aspects. Not only does the vitamin D you’re soaking in from the summer sun help you fight off colds and flu, but it turns out even the dirt under your fingernails may be working in your favor! The “friendly” soil bacteria common in garden dirt and absorbed by inhalation or ingestion on vegetables has been found to alleviate symptoms of psoriasis, allergies and asthma, all of which may stem from an out-of-whack immune system. So go ahead and get your hands dirty. I thought gardening was only helping my taste buds and my budget; turns out, it is making me a whole better person. Happy gardening! Powered by WPeMatico The post Ask a Master Gardener: The long-term benefits of gardening – Jefferson City News Tribune appeared first on House Decor Club. via House Decor Club https://ift.tt/3dD6y2a My husband, Bill, and I really enjoy watching the British gardening program “Gardeners’ World.” In the U.K., it airs every Friday night during primetime, and the broadcasts are an hour long for most of the garden season. Why can’t we Americans get our gardening fixes like that? Since I know you’re wondering, you have to subscribe to Britbox to view “Gardeners’ World” in the U.S. We also can watch British mysteries and other programs that don’t air here, so I think it’s worth every penny. Monty Don is the host of “Gardeners’ World.” He’s an amiable fellow who is passionate about gardening. The program is filmed in Longmeadow, his 2-acre garden in Herefordshire. I’ve always wanted to give my garden a name, but so far all I can come up with is Whimpering Pines. I’m open to suggestions, but I digress. Monty has created individual garden “rooms” such as the Jewel Garden, the Writing Garden, the Cottage Garden and the Vegetable Garden. Each week, he works in different areas of them while sharing tips, highlighting stunning plants and so on. The program also features profiles of gardeners across the U.K. and visits to amazing gardens that I’ve been adding to my bucket list. What I love most about “Gardeners World” is watching Monty and his co-hosts getting their hands dirty, showing us how to grow a wide variety of plants and teaching viewers new skills. During this coronavirus pandemic, the new programs have continued to air each week despite the challenges of producing them while also practicing social distancing. In each episode, they focus on teaching what new gardeners need to know in order to successfully grow their own food. That is awesome. Near the end of each episode, Monty enjoys giving viewers a list of “jobs for the weekend.” While Bill likes to feign indignation at being told what to do, I like seeing what British gardeners will soon be up to and comparing it with what we Inland Northwest gardeners need to take care of in our gardens. We have more in common than you might think. With that in mind, here are your jobs for the weekend. I know I’m a day or two late, but it’s my big chance. If you grew amaryllis bulbs indoors during the winter, move them outdoors for the summer. We put our pots on the deck in filtered light, water them each week, and we occasionally give them liquid fertilizer. It’s safe to plant basil seeds outdoors. Known for being finicky about chilly temperatures, this herb is well worth growing any time after June 1. Keep your eyes open for developing insect problems. It you spot something, take the time to identify the bug so you know if any action is required. I’ve been seeing a lot of beneficial insects lately, and I know their mission is to help control the bad guys. Please avoid using pesticides. There are plenty of simple, organic methods to address any problems that arise. Have you felt envious of your friends’ and neighbors’ blooming bulbs this spring? Believe it or not, the fall bulb catalogs are already coming out, so do a little dreaming and planning while there’s still a good selection available. Set aside little blocks of time for weeding. The more you keep up with them now, the quicker you’ll get ahead of them. Don’t forget to take a break for tea and biscuits. Cheerio. Contact Susan Mulvihill at [email protected]. There are actually four ’scapes in gardening. Landscaping. We know what landscape means: the tools needed to design an attractive outdoor space. Think of it as arranging your living room. Think about how you will use the space. Do I need a play area, seating area, garden area, barbeque area, or a just-to-enjoy area? Harriet Phelps and her landscaping. Submitted photos Divide the area into quadrants and determine what is needed to achieve what you want. Landscaping is taken in steps and budget. There is always a plan. We want landscape to express our interests and creativity. There are eight basics of design:
Xeriscaping. Xeri is a Greek word for dry. It is landscaping that uses the minimum of supplemental water and is colorful and enjoyable. It does not mean dry, barren, or no maintenance. We live in a xeriscape – the desert. The concept was developed in Denver, Colorado, in response to water shortage and susceptibility to drought. There are seven principles:
Beautiful landscapes are created by using native and desert adapted plants. Native plants are better adapted to the climate area and results in success without excessive watering, fertilizers or pesticides. These plants provide beneficial habitat for wildlife of the area. Another consideration is to know the expectation of your HOA. Agriscaping means creatively and elegantly integrating elements of productive agriculture by means of growing edible foods or useful plants to reduce useless consumption, landfill, waste, and water usage. The concept was developed here in Arizona to understand and utilize planting of edible crops amongst the ornamental plants in your yard. Here in Zone 9 we have two growing seasons, spring and fall. Es-scaping means going into your yard and enjoying the fruits of your labor. During the hot months that we are entering now, we enjoy our gardens early in the morning or after sunset. We marvel at the plantings and how much has changed with our efforts. We are excited to bring in our garden produce for a meal and the wonderful flavor that fresh brings. We do not have irrigation in our yard, which adds the additional benefit of meditative watering and just enjoying the task. Escape to your yard and enjoy! It was an old small cottage that definitely needed some help. We were turning it into a rental house and it was in desperate need of paint! Below is the picture of the BEFORE. Not a pretty site – hey? We all know the transformation that paint brings to anything! Scroll down to see the AFTER! This is the side entry of the home. The foundation and window trim had brown peeling paint. The yellow vinyl siding was in good condition but needed a fresh coat to look fabulous. The electrical box and wires stuck out like a sore thumb. It was an attention getter in a bad way. I decided to go with a NAVY BLUE paint for the exterior. I picked several different navy blues and had sample quarts – Color to Go made at Sherwin Willams. Even though the paint colors I chose were different brands, SW will make sample quarts. I’ve been using these sample paints for years. The Color to Go are inexpensive and give enough coverage to help you decide if you like the color or not! You can see exactly how the paint color works with lighting and your decor! What color did I end up choosing? The home was painted NAVY BLUE with white trim work. It’s super cute. The four paint color samples I painted on the garage sidewall:Sherwin Williams Naval– classic Navy blue Benjamin Moore Hale Navy – classic Navy blue that seemed to have a bit more gray to it. Behr Very Navy – a little brighter Navy blue than the rest. Dunn Edwards Nightfall – classic Navy blue As you can see most of the samples are very close in color. So which color did I end up using? Behr Very Navy. I wanted just a tad brighter Navy blue and this one delivered. The trim color I used was Sherwin Williams Extra White. The front of the cottage before painting… Are you interested in seeing how it turned out? Here you go…Dramatic? Stunning? Charming? However, while working from home has become quite the task, changing up the space you work in can truly make a difference in how inspired you become. The key is simple, bring in a style that you like and fully embrace it in your office space. Here are minimal office space ideas that are functional and stylish. Wall Mounted Desk
The lighter the hues you use for your home office the larger it will appear giving you that grand showcase If you have a smaller office, keeping things on the floor is the last thing you want to do. That is where having a wall-mounted desk will come into play. Raising things off of the floor enables you to make the room feel larger while keeping a chic appearance. Keep your lamp and computer on par with your table for an exceptional appearance. Colorful Chair
When in doubt consider a textured one tone chair for that bold aspect that makes the room come to life without taking away from your decor. Just because a room is minimal it doesn’t mean it needs to be boring. Reason why bringing in a colorful chair will instantly make the room come to life. The key is working with a chair that is smaller in structure yet is upholstered with a fun pattern that can instantly make the room come to life. It will be almost as if the chair instantly gave the space a boost of character. Black & Wood
The darker shade will further showcase how expansive a room feels. It’s all about making the room feel fresh with a hint of texture. If you want a minimal office yet must add an edge to it, use a black hue and work in blonde wood. The two might seem like they don’t blend well together; however, it’s quite the contrary. The right shade of black brings in a chic edge that will ultimately become the focus of the room, while the blonde wood will brighten the overall appearance. If you truly want to take it to the next level bring in a soft shade of gray. Plenty of Storage
When it comes to storage, adding units that will embrace the room’s appeal will further showcase the room’s aesthetic while giving you more space. Just because you’re going with a minimal style does not mean you need to only have a few items in the room. If you have an office that you’re working from regularly, you are going to have a ton of paper, pens, books, and notes everywhere. That is where having storage comes into play. The key is getting a tall unit that comes with ample banks of space where you can add files, books, and even extra shelving right where you need it most. Double it Up
Having space for two people works great except when you’re on top of each other, which is why we love the idea of giving your office a bit of space between the two while still being on the same table area. Let’s say you and your partner are both working from home and there’s only one room to work from- its time to get creative. And by creative we mean doubling up the space. This means taking your office wall and extending it enough to where you can have two tables, two chairs, and some separation between. It’s all about creating a space that both can work from without being in each other’s face. Consider it one of the easiest ways to work together while keeping it chic and minimal. Chalkboard Wall
Use your chalkboard wall to make a huge difference in the room, by allowing it to be the main focus while being functional and easy on the eye. If you’re one of those people who loves to keep a paper trail while working, you might want to consider a chalkboard wall. Not only do they look cool but it allows you to have one space where you can scribble down your ideas and goals of the day without creating a mountain of paper that is scattered all over the place. Furthermore, you can keep important notes directly in front of you. Crisp Lines
Bring in unique lines to fully showcase what your office space can do and how crisp and clean it is. Work with wood accents to enhance the lines you’re focusing on. It’s all about keeping it crisp and fresh when you’re on a minimal stand. You want to maintain the room as linearly as possible without being too frigid. Think of it as creating a minimal room while still having all the essential bits right where you need it most. Nevertheless, add a creative nook that has an unusual line that instantly draws your attention to that area of the room. Dreamy Wood
Leave open spaces of wood to make the room come to life in an overall manner. There is just something magical, dreamy, and exceptionally chic about an all-wood office. Not only does it make a room come to life, but it instantly soothes the soul. We love the idea of having an all-wood room that has been paired with wood furniture so that it appears as if you have entered a new dimension right in your home. Work with wood stools to keep it minimal yet embrace the room’s woodsy aesthetic. Accent Color
The simple use of using one accent color makes a world of a difference in the aesthetic of the room. As stated previously, a minimal room does not need to be boring, it can be everything you expect it to be and more with just a splash of color. Bring in a bright shade such as yellow, blue, orange, or even green and splash them around the room. You don’t want or need to have a bold showcase to make the space feel alive you can have a chic twist and instantly give the room that bold feature with a welcoming hue that embraces the room overall. One desk Two Jobs
One long table can make a huge difference while still allowing two people to work at once. It’s all about embracing the room’s space and truly loving every area of your minimal office. When in doubt, of what to bring to a minimal office, bring in one desk and have it work double. A singular desk that is wide enough can work for two people. It’s all about embracing the room’s aesthetic and ensuring you can fit a big enough desk in the room. Having one desk work double the amount works great for those that don’t have much space yet have to work with a spouse at the same time. Furthermore, it enables you to have your favorite materials in one space without overcrowding the area. When it comes to your office what items must you have? Share with us below. Large Scale BBQ Banners, Postcards and PennantsI printed these prints at Staples, but you can print them at any store or copy shop that prints in large scale – here are some big BBQ banners, postcards and pennants. How to Print Giant BBQ SignsI loved the large size banners for my BBQ signs! They’re 2 1/2 feet by 6 feet. (So, yes, ginormous. When I ordered mine, they were even on sale for $20 – check your local store for specials!) Here’s what I did, and you can download the free printables below! Planning for my BBQ, I knew I wanted signs for the BBQ itself – and for the food and drink stations. I also wanted little signs by the food and drink. Plus, what’s a party without pennants? Large BBQ BannersLet’s start by looking at the banners. Two Style BBQ BannersI created two styles – vertical and horizontal, both sized for the large, 2 1/2 by 6-foot banners. I thought the vertical style would work great on the garage door, front door, front of the house, or anywhere else like that to show guests they’re in the right place. The horizontal ones will work great in the backyard or kitchen! Food & Drink BBQ BannersI wanted to create small banners over the food and drink stations. But since the large banners were on sale for $20 – $10 cheaper than the small ones, I had them printed as the large banners. I’ve included both sizes for you just in case you’d like the smaller banners. They’re different files because the proportions are different between the two sizes. Free BBQ CardsI wanted to make cards that matched the theme to label the food, salads, drinks and so on. Staples has cool postcards you can print with bright, glossy color. You only need to print on one side — which is cheaper, anyway! Just print as many as you want, fold them in half, and write the food item in the lighter rectangle. You can print these at home, too, from the PDF. Right-click this link or the image below and choose “save link as” to download the PDF for the cards. BBQ Free PennantsWhat’s a party without pennants? Often it’s cheaper — and looks better — to print your color prints at a good commercial printer like Staples than at home (and saves on ink). I printed the PDF at Staples – and they look great!
