For the youngest gardeners and nature lovers, summer often means day camps where they learn about plants and animals, programs with groups of like-minded junior naturalists, and perhaps a class on a favorite topic, such as flowers or caterpillars. Not this year, though. As beleaguered parents and disappointed kids already know, coronavirus has squelched many of the typical children’s activities that summer usually brings (along with much of the rest of modern life) . But with equal parts ingenuity and flexibility, families can find other ways to nurture a budding gardening instinct. Whether the setting is the kitchen table, a woodland park or a suburban vegetable patch, kids can still engage in that most important work of childhood: getting their hands dirty. One home-based option is choosing a garden theme to explore, suggests Christy Pearl of London, a retired teacher and president of Madison County Master Gardeners. The options are practically endless — seeds, herbs, parts of plants, whatever strikes a child’s fancy. “They could save seeds from fruits and vegetables that they’re eating,” Pearl said. Another theme with affordable materials that you can find in the pantry or at the grocery store is beans and legumes. “They can collect, sort, make a mosaic,” she said, adding that kids love sorting and that old egg cartons make handy containers. “Or you can explore the different parts of plants: flowers, stems, roots,” she suggested. “You can pick flowers and dissect them.” Even mealtime can bring an epiphany, she observed: “Hey, we’re eating a carrot — that’s the root of a plant!” For families seeking wide-open spaces, “All 19 Metro Parks are open,” said Peg Hanley, spokeswoman for Columbus Metro Parks. “Restrooms are open,” she added, an important factor when you are out and about with those who have just mastered the art of using one. “Naturalists are walking the trails,” she said. “They can point out a hummingbird nest,” for instance, or answer questions about whatever else you are looking at. (To find a naturalist, look for their distinctive green shirt, she advised.) Among the parks she singled out with special appeal for budding green thumbs: • Three Creeks, which features a structure called an “insect hotel” with holes, nooks and crannies for the kinds of little creatures that fascinate children. • Battelle-Darby, where “the prairies start to come into bloom in July,” creating vistas of shimmering colors. Plus: Bison! If spying one of these giant mammals in person doesn’t impress your kid, nothing will. • Inniswood Metro Gardens, which includes an enchanting children’s garden and other specialty areas. If the idea of visiting a park appeals to your family, you aren’t alone. This spring, “Our attendance figures have gone through the roof,” Hanley said. Based on number of visitors, “A Thursday in March was like a Sunday in May.” But with Metro Parks comprising more than 27,700 acres over seven counties, social distancing is quite doable. (For the latest safety updates, visit www.metroparks.net.) For some families, gardening begins at home. Kristina and Chris Nicholson of Pickerington, for instance, both grew up in gardening families and are sharing that tradition with their 4-year-old daughter, Amelia, whom they call “Millie.” “Millie loves being in nature and is turning into the little lady who always has muddy rain boots on,” Kristina Nicholson said. “She definitely loves getting her hands dirty and watching things grow.” The Nicholsons are raising vegetables at Pickerington Community Gardens, where the family can easily maintain social distancing with other gardeners, Kristina Nicholson said. Millie “helped plant the seeds. We had to show her not to plant six or seven in one spot.” Now that the seeds have sprouted, “Millie loves watering.” “We planted sunflowers at home,” Kristina added. “Millie waters those, too.” As all gardeners must, Millie is learning patience, her mom reports — a trait that grownups, too, might wish for more of these days. “Our radishes are about to be harvested,” Kristina Nicholson said. Millie wanted to pull them out too soon, so Mom gently explained that it wasn’t quite time. Diana Lockwood, a freelance writer covering gardening topics, posts on Facebook at https://ift.tt/2nBl2sb. Since we have 4 bathrooms in our home this bathroom isn’t used that much with just the two of us. It had the dreaded carpet in the bathroom. Yikes. Carpet just doesn’t work in a bathroom. I found a nice tile I liked at Home Depot and decided to get it done with new flooring- finally! The biggest cost of this bathroom update was the tile flooring and the light fixture. Home decor was added to make the room pretty! This is what the bathroom looked like before. It’s a pretty simple bathroom with a wonderful round window! Scroll down to see the fresh bathroom update. The white carpet was stained so I placed a rug over the stains. What we updated and didn’t update:
This is the bathroom light fixture I purchased from Amazon. Close-up of the flooring. Grey rug from At Home. So there you go a pretty simple updated bathroom. That looks so much better! This storage bench use to be in my office back when the space was turquoise. I’ll know you are a long time reader if you remember that! It was put in the garage and has seen better days. I decided it would be perfect for the attic fort to hold board games, art supplies, blankets, or puzzles. It is deep and has a lot of space inside. Here’s how I did this storage bench makeover! This post is sponsored by HomeRight but all ideas and opinions are 100% my own. This post also contains affiliate links. The BeforeThe Storage Bench Makeover RevealThe slanted walls of the fort are going to be black and the love seat is a dark yellow so I decided to go with a bright white for the storage bench. I think paired with these pillows it will be the perfect addition to the boy hang out place. Makeover DetailsGiving a piece of old furniture a face-lift is easy! And it can easily be done in a day or two. Here’s how! Step 1:Sand the surface with a medium grit sandpaper like 120. This will make the surface a little rough and the paint will adhere better. It will also help remove any dirt and grime. Step 2:Clean the whole thing really well with a damp rag. As soon as it is dry and dull, it is ready for the next step! Step 3:Make any repairs that are needed. Fill dents and scratches with paintable putty. I needed to nail some trim back on and calk along a seam. It really wasn’t in too bad of shape all things considered. Step 4:Remove any hardware and tape off anything you don’t want to paint. I decided to keep the the inside dark so I covered the opening. Place the furniture piece on a tarp to protect your workspace. I like to place the furniture on scrap wood so that it doesn’t end up sticking to the tarp. Step 5:The best way to get a smooth finish is to use a paint sprayer. I love the HomeRight Finish Max Super. I loaded it with my favorite white paint and added a thin coat. Several thin coats are better than one or two thicker coats. I like to use a semi gloss paint on things that will get a lot of wear and tear and will need to be wiped down a lot. Since this is going in a garage attic with a bunch of boys, I’d say it will be getting wiped down quite a bit. Do you have any painting projects on your to-do list? Outdoor Fireplace KitIf you’ve been around TCL for a bit, then you know we’ve been making a few house updates. We replaced our deck last year and now we’re continuing to focus on the backyard. I have been wanting my husband to build an outdoor fireplace in our backyard for as long as I can remember. I kept telling my handy husband that he could easily do it, but he just wasn’t on board with starting from scratch. My next step was to look for a DIY outdoor fireplace kit that would take all the guesswork away. Although this project was a partnership, all opinions and ideas are 100% mine. That’s when I found the fireplace kits from RomanStone and they looked pretty easy when I viewed their video. I reached out to discuss a possible partnership and they were on board! I have to say that this company was one of the most engaged and friendliest I’ve worked with. They really do make the whole process of choosing and building the best outdoor fireplace for your needs. The few times we had questions during the building process, I reached out via in a direct message on Instagram, and would receive an answer back within minutes! And usually, all our questions were answered had we just read a little further in the instructions. The directions sent along with the kit were comprehensive and very easy to follow… I thought they were easier than reading Lego directions. How to Build an Outdoor Fireplace
We even had a lot of concrete left over to create a few garden decor projects like fern imprinted stepping stones, concrete flower pots, and concrete garden spheres. What Comes in a Fireplace KitThe kit is delivered to you via a trucking delivery service. They will call first to schedule a time that you’ll be home to receive it. There are 7 pallets that weigh a total of 12K pounds. They were packed and wrapped very well. It was one driver who unloaded everything into our driveway. One of the pallets had broken during freight which had to be unloaded stone by stone, which we all pitched in with. So, my advice is to have someone who is available to help if needed.
Even though this video is of their older Fremont model, it was was very helpful with the basics of learning how to build an outdoor fireplace. They have several very helpful videos on their Youtube Channel. Big Ass SquareIf you watched the video, they mention making and using a Big Ass Square. A Square ruler is a tool to make sure you have things lined up. This one is just a jumbo-sized square you make as extra assistance in keeping things… squared up and level. You most certainly don’t have to have one of these to build a DIY outdoor fireplace, but it sure was helpful and made things easier. We watched their video on how to make one and my husband whipped one up in less than an hour. We didn’t paint ours, but we think the use of this tool is invaluable. They are considering making it a part of their kits. We used it after stacking each level to make sure we were lined up accurately. Additional Tools Needed for Building Outdoor Fireplace
DIY Stacked Stone Outdoor FireplaceOnce we completed all the layers with stacked stone, it was time to put the top slabs on the fireplace and the woodboxes. These pieces are by far the heaviest in the whole kit. Since we are in a pandemic, we avoided having anyone over to help, until this step. We masked up and recruited a couple of friends, who were all very happy to help. I reached out to @buildwithRoman via Instagram to ask for guidance on what the best approach was but had to read a little further in the guidelines, it suggests using the step layers as props, moving up each time. Because we didn’t have much room behind the fireplace, it felt less stable and the guys came up with their own technique by using 8 ft, 2×4’s, and slid it up to the top. Once completed, you need to let it cure for 72 hours. We absolutely love how it looks and I can’t wait to get our outdoor furniture and a few plants all placed. I’ll be showing you a few ways to use this space for outdoor living and how I made planter poles for cafe lights, so be sure to check back soon. In the meantime, I’ll be scooting my chair up and making a few S’Mores. Head over to RomanStone and pick out your favorite DIY Outdoor Fireplace Kit. It typically happens the moment you step into the home, and feel the salt in the air, that has been perfectly paired with chic patterns and layers that embrace the room. Whether you have a beach house you visit every week during the summer, or you want to transform your home into a year-round beach house oasis. The following ideas will enable you to embrace your space to its full potential and create the perfect beach house aesthetic, that suits you and your style. A View While Dining
There’s no better way to embrace your view quite like bringing in chairs that are directly sitting in front of the view or surround it fully. Is there anything more charming about a beach house that has an exceptional view? We think not! Therefore, if you have the view and the space its time to embrace it and add a dining table. But not any dining table, you want to bring a rattan dining table with matching chairs and let the airiness of the material itself make the statement it’s intended to make. Use light linen to complete the look and have that beach vibe. Retro Chic
If you don’t want to bring in a retro appliance consider a retro bench! Both will get the job done effortlessly without taking over the kitchen aesthetic. One of the things we love most of a beach house is how retro most of them tend to feel. If you have a beach house already and want to give it a chic retro feel, start with the kitchen. The kitchen is an excellent space to start working on a retro feel, you can add a retro refrigerator, retro stools, or even go for a retro color. Doing so adds a fresh take that instantly makes the room come to life. Nautical Bits
Add a touch of rattan to your nautical bits to make them come to life in a bold manner that does interfere with your overall decor. If there is one common factor beach homes have in common, is how much they have nautical bits incorporated. Not only does nautical décor make perfect sense to have in a beach house due to the colors displayed but due to how old and engaging it can be. When using nautical décor, you want to bring as much red, white, and blue patterns as possible for that bold appeal that feels nautical yet fresh. Large Sectional
Having a large sectional will instantly make a room come to life with a hint of cozy appeal. It’s the perfect way of bringing a focus to your living room while having one bold piece of furniture. Whether you enjoy going to your beach house with your family or all of your friends, seating is important. You want to be able to seat as many people as possible while bringing them together. To do that you need to have a sectional, but not just a traditional sectional, you want to bring in a larger than life piece. If you don’t want to bring in a large sectional, consider bringing in two or more furniture pieces and combining them for that larger than life appeal. Patterned Rug
Having a patterned room will instantly make a room brighter but with a sense of cozy. It’s all about having it perfect centered in a your living while making it come to life. Even though you’re decorating for a beach vibe, bringing a rug can make the room come to life in a cozy manner. Just because a room is meant to be airy and fresh doesn’t mean you can’t have a cozy aspect to it. That is where a bold patterned rug will come into play. The key is bringing in a daring pattern that has some sort of blue hue weaved in. Having a hint of blue will instantly create that charm while still being cozy and having that beach house aesthetic. Weave in décor with the same hues as your rug to bring everything together. An Array of Heights
Whether you bring two stools of the same character or you use unique ones every time. You want to bring unique heights so the room feels chic. Regardless of how big or small, your beach house is, adding height to a room comes in multiple different ways. This can be done by working with an array of heights. You want to display your array of heights in a clustered manner so that the height difference is what draws your attention first. Consider using stools, planters, or even coffee tables to brighten the room overall, without taking away from the décor you already have. Floral Accents
Work with floral cushions and use the same hues throughout the room, especially if you bring in greenery or bits that have a vivid aspect to them. Even though you’re just working on creating the ultimate beach house, florals are key. Floral décor is perfect for a beach house, due to how charming and feminine it can be. Bring in airy furniture and pair it with floral accents to complete the look. It’s all about the color pairings that you bring in to work with your floral accents. Whether you decide to bring a floral hint on throw pillows, as part of an accent chair or even both, you want to make sure your display feels fresh every time. Focus on the Porch
If you truly want to go bold with your decor, bring in a swing. It’s all about making the swing the main focus while being fun and chic. The perfect touch to a beach house. One of the many perks of having a beach house is how much air flows through them. They tend to have a porch, sunroom, and a deck, sometimes all three. Making it perfect for those that love to be outdoors at all times of the day and night. If you have a sunroom or indoor porch you want to take a good luck at it and reinvent every aspect of that room. Bring in summer staples such as wicker furniture, plants, and a smaller coffee table to give you that cozy appeal that makes the room come to life. White Shiplap
Consider bringing in a shiplap ceiling to fully expand the room and make your ceilings feel taller and fresh. Shiplap is one of those textured materials that feels airy, and beachy while still adding a cozy element. The material itself has a textured roughness that forces the room to have a cabin-like finish while the white helps expand on the greatness of the room. Work with a bright shade of white to truly give it that open touch while the shiplap panels provide a lived-in feel. The shiplap finish is perfect for those that want to introduce wood to a room without having to use a classic hue. Breakfast Nook
Add a round table as your main breakfast space to add a modern flair that feel chic every time you look at it. It can also double up as something else that fully showcases the room. Something is charming and eccentric about having a designated breakfast space. Though you might end up using it for a multitude of things, a breakfast nook with a colorful spin can bring you that hint of beach house your home needs. Bring in mismatched hues, and chairs for that fresh, modern vibe that oozes from that area. Use a rug underneath to cozy it up while still having a vivid aspect to the area. If you have been thinking of purchasing a beach house, it’s time to do so! Furthermore, take one of these ideas and allow your space to come to life with a hint of coastal. Which of these ideas are you most excited about? Share with us below. However, not all of us have the luxury of having an outdoor space that allows us to sit and enjoy nature. But what many do, have is a patio or porch space that has been screened in. Though it might not seem like the same thing, it can serve the same purpose of bringing tranquility where you need it most. The following ideas are charming and modern with a hint of peace that omits from them to give your patio or porch that perfect dose of décor. Bring the Inside Out
If you truly want to take advantage of bringing your indoor decor outdoors consider adding lamps or even a ceiling fan. When you think of a screened porch or patio you think of an area that blends the outdoors with the indoors seamlessly, Therefore, why not bring indoor influences outdoors and make it one unified space. Take classic furniture elements such as a sofa, accent chair, and even a rug and layout on your porch to create that second seating area that seamlessly works. Blend flowers in multiple different hues and sizes to work in that outdoor aspect while still having the indoor elements become the main focus. Use Wood
Add as much wood as possible to make the room have a cozy aesthetic without going overboard with creating a warm welcoming appeal. Wood is one of those elements that work well in any area of the home. It makes any structure have a bit of charm while being chic and easy to work with. When it comes to your patio or porch you want to use blonde wood. Blonde wood is very light, making it extremely easy to work with and pair with other pastel shades. Furthermore, if you add darker hues it creates a modern contrast that instantly makes any room come to life. Second Dining Space
Bring in a bench to emphasize on the idea of having a dining space that feels almost as if you are on a picnic on a regular basis. If you have a smaller home and don’t have a dining area but you do have a screened patio consider creating your dream dining space right there. Think about it, a screened patio is the perfect area to have a second dining room, not only is it cozy, but it allows you to feel as if you’re in two places at once without having to leave your home. You get to see the beautiful view of nature without having to deal with bugs or animals that are outdoors. Pair the dining table and a chic bench and the look is complete. Add a SwingJust because your porch is screened in does not mean you can’t have a swing. Having a swing is perfect for those that want to add a little dash of charm without having to go overboard. Furthermore, a swing is one of those items that instantly brings a country feel to any parts of the home. Add a swing to your porch or patio and pair it with patterned cushions for a custom dose of character. Pair it with a chic basket and you will have the perfect rustic aesthetic. Work with Colors
Add colorful cushions to bring in color without having to completely change the aesthetic of the room. Work with multiple patterns to complete the look. Whether you’re a fan of minimal décor, or you prefer a more traditional space, color can make a huge difference. While this might sound like a no brainer, there is a bit of a science when it comes to adding color to a porch. The key is adding color in areas that feel dull or empty. For example, if you have an awkward corner and can’t decide what to do with it, its time to bring in color. Doing so instantly upgrades the room while giving it a visual appeal that brightens the space overall. Or add a plant for a dose of green that works exceptionally well when you want to add fresh color. Create a Lounge
For a chic lounge appeal bring in a rug. Doing so enables you to lay on the floor or even just hang out during the day drinking a glass of wine or two. Your screened porch doesn’t have to be anything but the perfect oasis where you get to relax. To do just that create a lounge and make the room come to life. It’s all about embracing the square footage that you have and going from there. Bring in a comfortable couch, a few chairs, and/or a rocking accent seat and go from there. The more comfortable the space feels the better! It’s all about embracing the room and ensuring it has a new and chic appeal. When in doubt, add a stool or two for extra seating. Add Height
Bring in similar light fixtures to create a symmetrical appeal without going overboard or having too much structure in the room. Okay, so your screened porch is lower in height, and you want to extend it a bit? If that is the case, its time to consider bringing height and expanding on it. To do that bring in light fixtures in different height ranges and allow them to be the staggering touch the room needs for an added dose of elegant height. Use fixtures in multiple different finishes for a contrasting aesthetic that makes the room feel unique yet charming at once. It’s all about approaching the room with the idea of making it feel taller yet not cluttering it. Neutrals
The more neutral shades you use the bigger the room will appear. It’s all about expanding the room and giving it a bold approach. Some shades simply make a room come to life, and those are neutrals. Neutrals are perfect for any size room at any moment. Whether you want to make a room come to life, or you prefer to have soft shades become the focal point. Nudes can make any room feel grander by simply being showcased! Bring in soft neutral shades and expand on them by bringing in patterns and other accent bits that truly make the room come to life. Bring on the Greenery
The bolder your plants are the calmer the room will appear. It’s all about making the room look as enchanting as possible. Even though your screened porch/patio is placed in an enclosed space, greenery makes an excellent addition. It adds freshness, and color right where you want and needs it most. Whether you add one or two plants it’s completely up to you; however, you want to ensure you bring in plants that have some sort of texture, or you can bring planters that do the same. The bigger your planters are, the grander your plant would appear. Go Big
Consider luxury as the main element when it comes to going big with your decor. Add a fireplace to complete the look overall. Why not take a risk and go big with your décor? If you have a bigger space, consider bringing in large pieces of furniture and expanding on the idea of having your décor come to life. Whether you make it a second living room or bedroom it’s completely up to you, the idea is to make the room feel as grand as possible while still working with what you have. Add a sofa swing and make the room feel extra comfortable. Which of these ideas are you most inclined to try? Share with us your ideas below. All gardening talks are free and accessible via computer or telephone On Wednesday, June 10, at 5 p.m., Chacey, the eminent regional vegetable grower and an original founder of the Pagosa Springs Community Garden, will discuss how to choose vegetable plants that will thrive in the region and best practices for each. The evening’s format begins with photos of Chacey’s personal garden and he will discuss what he is currently doing in his garden. An in-depth presentation on his suggestions for the best regional vegetable varieties will follow. All participants will be muted but invited to send in questions on his presentation and on any gardening topic. An avid grower with seven decades plus of experience, Chacey is a believer in trial and error in all areas of gardening. Chacey believes that learning from mistakes is the foundation of successful gardening. The Pagosa Springs Community Garden is located at the end of 5th Street on the San Juan River in downtown Pagosa Springs. Decades old, the garden is on land owned by the Town of Pagosa Springs and plots are granted to the town’s citizens free of charge. In 2017, the garden was rejuvenated by community volunteers with the assistance of local Pagosa Springs businesses. Raised beds and deer-out fencing were constructed with donated lumber. Soil amendments, fertilizers, seeds, plant starts, tools, hoses and other necessary items are all provided through the generosity of Pagosa Springs businesses. The Town of Pagosa Springs provides free water for the Pagosa Springs Community Garden. The Pagosa Springs Community Garden is free and open to all. To receive more information, email [email protected]. Residents and town visitors are invited to stop by and enjoy the lovely space. The 5 p.m. free gardening talk will be held via Zoom or telephone.
